Cider Review: Excellent and captivating story based on WW2.  With the main character being Dirk, a 13 year old boy, this is a great chapter book filled with suspense and mild peril, without being too graphic for young readers.  Great for homeschoolers with study questions at the back of the book.

In Hunger Winter by Rob Currie, 13-year-old Dirk has been the man of the house since his father disappeared while fighting against the Nazis with the Dutch Resistance. When Dirk's older sister is arrested by the Gestapo, Dirk is fearful that he and his little sister Anna will be next. Desperate, Dirk and Anna run away to find his father. As Dirk leads Anna through the war-torn Netherlands, from farmyards to work camps, he must rely on his wits and his father's teaching to find his way. Recommended for ages 8 to 12 years; softcover.
